The General Hospital Emergency Physician mentioned that the main symptoms associated with food poisoning are abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, malaise and joint pain.
These can occur after a few hours or until a day after consumption, “these affectations are self-limiting by themselves of two to five days at most, and their initial treatment is focused on the control of symptoms,” he said.
However, the specialist noted that in some cases there may be complications associated with severe dehydration, so he recommended going to the emergency department in case of drowsiness and drink a lot of water and electrolytes to avoid dehydration.
He commented that the elderly and minors are considered at risk groups to present such complications, so in case of food poisoning recommended to maintain close monitoring, with supervision of the treating doctor.
Regarding the frequent causes of these health problems, he said that they can be preparing food in the open, consumed raw, poor hygiene or in poor condition, although this occurs most commonly in the summer season.
The state official commented that, although for the moment there has not been a rebound of cases in the General Hospital, on average they attend 30 assessments in the Adult Emergency room for diarrhea.
